The Island Explorer travels to the exciting Tubbataha Reefs and its surrounding areas in the Sulu Sea between the months of March to early June, 2001. Here divers have the opportunity to dive and photograph fascinating coral specimens that thrive in this underwater wilderness that abruptly rises from depths over a thousand feet. Many have been awestruck by vertigo-inducing walls, reef crests and edges, extensive reef flats, deep lagoons with coral beds and giant clams. Large schools of pelagics congregate in this vast reef area to swoop in on divers as they anticipate the blue. Manta, eagle rays, sharks, tuna and wahoo glide pass in their timeless search for sustenance. Many divers have witnessed awesome encounters with magnificent creatures that make these bountiful reefs their homes. Tubbataha was declared a World Heritage site in 1993 by UNESCO because of its rare biodiversity.

During the rest of the year, the Island Explorer is stationed in the Cebu area venturing to the magnificent sites of Malapascua, where thresher sharks and mantas are very often seen. She also travels to the islands off Bohol and Dumaguete where the diving has always been excellent. The Island Explorer has often been commissioned for probing trips into unknown areas amongst the 7,107 islands of the archipelago. It has been used to survey remote regions in search of marine species that have proven to be new to science. It has served in some major archeological projects in which priceless artifacts have been recovered from the ocean floor in contribution to world culture.
